“Laoch” means warrior — and this film introduces us to one of Ireland’s finest.

A Journey of Strength, Spirit & Identity
iBAM! is proud to present a special screening of Laoch: Defy the Odds, a stirring feature-length documentary that follows Irish powerlifter Thomas “Tommy” McCague on his remarkable journey of resilience, strength, and transformation.
From Drogheda, Ireland, Tommy is Ireland’s only powerlifter with dwarfism. This moving film captures his rise—from battling depression and obesity to breaking records on the international stage.

About the Filmmakers
Lotus Beast Productions is the creative force behind the film, led by longtime collaborators Stephan Mazurek and Liz Sung. Based in Chicago, the duo brings over two decades of combined experience in documentary storytelling. Stephan, an accomplished director and cinematographer, and Liz, a multifaceted producer, editor, and visual artist, co-founded Lotus Beast in 2019 to tell deeply human, visually compelling stories. Their seamless collaboration ensures each project is crafted with authenticity, empathy, and artistic depth — from the first idea to the final frame.
A Story that Reflects Our Cultural Values
At its core, Laoch: Defy the Odds is an Irish story—of strength, spirit, and self-definition. It’s a perfect fit for iBAM!’s mission to celebrate Irish heritage through the arts, and to spotlight voices that challenge, inspire, and unite.
