Smock Alley Theater, named after Dublin’s legendary 18th century theater, was founded in 2000 to present Polling Place, a political/romantic comedy about a precinct captain who bucks the party, and his father, to support a green candidate, while dealing with an ex-wife and a new girlfriend – all on election day: It’s a tale about the father, the son, and the holy vote. (Recommended – Sun-Times) After a lengthy process to procure the rights and develop the next play, Smock Alley produced the highly acclaimed The Quiet Man Tales in 2009, at The Chicago Theatre Downstairs. Based on the same Maurice Walsh book from which the classic film came, the play interweaves three love stories including the tale of the ex-boxer, home from America, in search of a quiet life. The Quiet Man Tales received two Jeff Award nominations. Smock Alley’s current project, a play set during the Irish War of Independence, is currently in development.
